A Vision of Hope: Supporting the Orphaned Children of Kenya

Updated: Jan 21

At Salty Life Foundation, our mission goes beyond just meeting the immediate needs of children. We are committed to making a lasting impact on the lives of children who have been orphaned or who come from acute poverty. Our vision is to provide not only the resources they need to survive but also the opportunities they need to thrive and grow into their fullest potential.

One of the cornerstones of this vision is our partnership with Overcoming Faith Schools in Kenya. Overcoming Faith Schools located in Kakamega, Nambale, and Bunyore, Western Kenya. Through this collaboration, we ensure that every child in our care receives a high-quality education. But education is only part of the story. At Overcoming Faith Schools, they emphasize the importance of developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, recognizing the profound impact of faith and hope in shaping a child’s future.

Holistic Care for Every Child

These schools serve over 900 orphaned children, offering them not just an education but a holistic support system. The children are nurtured and supported in every aspect of their lives. They are provided essentials like food, clean water, clothing, school supplies, and medications—ensuring they have the foundation they need for a healthy, stable life. Beyond these basics, they are in an environment where they feel valued, loved, and empowered to dream.

Igniting a Passion for Learning

Our goal is not just to educate but to instill in our students a lifelong love for learning. We want them to see education as a gateway to a brighter future and to foster a desire to continue their studies beyond their time with us. By nurturing their curiosity and encouraging their potential, we help them envision possibilities far beyond the limitations of poverty. The students at Overcoming Faith Schools rank in the top percentages in all of Kenya.

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

Alice, one of the devoted Pastors at Overcoming Faith Schools, beautifully encapsulates our mission:

“I believe that a child born and grown up in poverty should not have to die in it. I dream of giving them a net, not a fish.”

This profound statement highlights our dedication to providing sustainable solutions. We aim to equip our children with the tools and skills they need to transform their own lives and contribute to their communities. By empowering them, we create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the individual—impacting families, neighborhoods, and future generations.

Current Projects (Jan 2025)

At Salty Life Foundation, we are constantly working to address pressing needs and improve the lives of the children we serve. Here are some of our current initiatives:

  • Road and School Compound Improvements: The roads leading to two of the children’s schools are in poor condition, and the landscape of one school compound is inadequate for the students’ needs. Our goal is to rebuild both the roads and the school compound to create a safer and more functional environment. We are currently awaiting a quote and plans report from an engineer to determine the cost and scope of this project.

As you can see in this video, the landscape and roads are in need of major improvement.
  • Provide Solar Power for Schools: Unreliable power is a frequent challenge for the schools we support. Old, inefficient generators often leave classrooms and facilities without electricity, disrupting learning and other vital activities.

Our solution? Install solar panels to provide a clean, reliable, and sustainable energy source for the schools. This upgrade will ensure that classrooms remain powered, students can study without interruptions, and school operations run smoothly.

  • Transition to Sustainable Cooking Methods: Many of the schools rely on wood-burning stoves for meal preparation. While these stoves are traditional, they are inefficient, time-consuming, and require a significant amount of firewood.

We’re working to convert these stoves to propane-based systems, which will improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and create a more comfortable cooking process for staff. This transition will also help free up valuable time and resources for other school needs.
